officialdamianmcginty: I have an 3.9 weighted and 3.4 unweighted. ive taken so many ap classes and for my senior year im planning to take 5 APs. i will take the sat later on…….. can i make it? :(  You sound fine to me! The average GPA for the incoming class of 2015 this year was 4.1, so you’re pretty close (I know people who got lower than a 3.9). The AP’s should help, and as long...

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years
I finished this book last night. I had asked for it for Christmas, on account of good reviews, but was worried it might be a bit pretentious. Or at least slightly disappointing, because most things don’t live up to their hype. And I was disappointed, to a degree. Not because it was a bad book, but because it didn’t really tell me anything new. “A Million Miles in a Thousand...

Two One Zero Two
New Year’s 2012 was a success! We triple dated at Walnut Creek on Ice with Chloe, Max, Ian, and Alyssa, and then headed up to Fish Ranch to watch the fireworks. It was a beautiful night, so we really lucked out (the last time I was up there, it was so foggy you couldn’t see a thing). We had a great view of the SF firework show, sans the heavy traffic and hoards of drunk...

Dim Sum!
Spent yesterday morning in Oakland Chinatown eating dim sum. We walked around for a bit afterwards, and then my mom and I went to Target and Michael’s. I ended up spending two hours in the store and buying over $100 worth of art supplies. Maybe I can motivate myself to actually draw something now? I’m looking forward to tonight. Christmas was so busy that I honestly...

Baby It's Cold Outside
Break is going by way too fast—it’s already over half-way through. Boooo. Christmas week was fantastic. Everything went smoothly with shopping and cooking and what-not. The only real hiccups were that my mom already owned the book I had gotten her (she bought it for iPad), and Chad’s iPhone case didn’t come in until two days after...

The Week in Baking
(Pictured from top to bottom: vanilla chai spice cookies, egg nog fudge, Christmas popcorn, gingerbread waffles, candied citrus peels, Oreo truffles) So. Much. Food. I went on a cooking/baking frenzy the week before Christmas. Some of the things not included in the pictures above: sweet onion dip, hot crab dip, slow-cooker mac & cheese, cheesy-bacon-ranch pull-apart bread,...

I Want to Make Art
I’m getting antsy because I haven’t drawn anything for a while. I can’t do anything digital, either, since I won’t have Photoshop until I go back to school. ksafjpowejfopaefjA:KJDFLKJSDAKLfj2p

Night Out in the City
Oh, I missed SF! Especially around Christmas time. Call me a sucker for holiday decorations. Chad, Gloria, Thomas and I walked around trying to find a place to eat for a bit until we stumbled across a cute alleyway with a row of Italian restaurants (I promise it’s less sketch than it sounds). We eventually stopped at one of them, but the food was kinda eh. Nevertheless, it was fun...

Aloha, Hawaii
Just spent a wonderful week in beautiful Kauai! Experienced my first luau, met some of Chad’s family, and went tubing down a river on Mount Waialeale—the rainiest spot in the world. The only downside was when Chad and I had to spend all of Friday night heaving over a toilet bowl due to a stomach virus (we’ve officially seen the best and worst of each other). Other than that,...

It's That Time of Year
It’s good to be home. I spent a full day shopping with my mom for stocking stuffers and what not, and then wrapped gifts/decorated stockings. I also spent the afternoon with Gloria (sitting outside of Sideboard for three hours), who I won’t be seeing much this break, unfortunately. It’s 12:16am and I still haven’t packed. I’ll be leaving at 6:30 in the...

Sweet Freedom.
Finals are finally done! Thank goodness. I can’t believe the quarter is already over. Where did the time go? I’m so excited to be going home and reuniting with everyone (oh, and no homework doesn’t hurt either), but at the same time, a part of me is sad to be leaving Isla Vista. I’ve managed to make some pretty awesome friends in the short time that I’ve been here,...

And The Leaves Are Finally Changing
I love autumn. It’s my favourite season, and I’ve been craving a true fall lately (Santa Barbara seems to be locked in perpetual summer). Since I got back Tuesday night, I had the opportunity to spend Wednesday at dim sum and Ikea with the family and Chad. And after doing a little prep work in the kitchen for today’s dinner, Chad picked me up to go see Breaking Dawn. I...

So Long, Santa Barbara.
It’s been a pretty chill week here at UCSB. I feasted on some fancy island/Thanksgiving cuisine at the Mosher Alumni House with ITO, spent some quality time with my inner wizard for a Harry Potter night in Santa Rosa, and danced the night away to 80s classics at a concert on DP. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to make the trip out to downtown for the holiday market on Sunday because of...

Sex-Free UCSB
I’ve been starting my illustration work for the Daily Nexus in the past week, which means I’ve been getting to see my artwork/photos in the daily paper. Doesn’t hurt that I get paid for each piece too. (; It’s going to be a busy weekend. I have an interview for a layout position with a start-up magazine this Saturday, and my graphic design portfolio is mostly on my...

I'm in a Good Mood.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks (hence the lack of updates), but things are going well here in SB. Midterms are over and Thanksgiving break is only two weeks away. Woo! The weekend was stellar. We won the big game against Cal Poly, and I got to spend hours sitting in a kitchen baking cookies and chatting about God knows what until three in the morning. It’s nights like those...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Weekend You've All Been...
This entire week I’ve been hibernating in the library trying to prepare for midterms (one on Thursday, two on Friday), so it was nice to be able to have a social life again this weekend. We spent Friday amongst the chaos on DP, and then Melissa and Chad came to visit Saturday! We went out for a bit for some monster burritos and people watching, but spent most of the night just...

Nineteen
Oh, the awkward year. No quite the anticipation of 16, 17, or 18, and not quite the glory of 20 and 21. Sigh. Chad and my friends surprised me with a birthday dinner at Aldo’s down on State Street last night. Then today, I came back to my room to find it decorated with streamers. Thus, my birthday turned out lovely, despite 4.5hrs of class, some unfavourable news, and a creeping...

Surprises All Around
Chad and I took Amtrak together for a surprise visit home! Our parents were in complete disbelief. Saturday, I went out to breakfast, then to the Valley Fair Mall for birthday shopping! My parents bought me a few tops and a pair of Steve Madden boots.(: Woo! Both Chad’s family and my own went out for dinner at the Melting Pot. It was delicious and a good time overall, especially...

It's Your Favourite Vitamin Shot: B12!
Had a very eventful past couple of days. I had a chance to check out the club activities fair, went for a spontaneous late-night long boarding adventure, attended drag queen bingo, and had an hour and a half long dinner in the DLG that make me laugh until I couldn’t breathe anymore (which was awesome, even if I had milk spilled on me…twice). But bingo was hands down the...

SLObound
Spent the weekend in SLO. Getting there and back wasn’t as difficult as I had expected, and Chad was waiting for me at the Amtrak station in a suit with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. We spent most of our time walking around downtown or hanging out at his dorm. I got to see the Lion King! Which was epic, despite it being in 3D. I learned “5 Years Time” on...

Absolutely Bizarre
UCSB’s first rain of the school year accompanied quite a few odd events. The rain itself was strange, to start. Everyone all over California was incurring the wrath of mother nature this morning—you’re never truly grateful for the invention of rainboots until you have to walk across campus in a downpour to get to class—only to be followed by a beautiful afternoon. Which of...

Tuesday Humpdays
And by humpday, I mean busiestfreakingday. No practice today, since the Daily Nexus meeting was around the same time. I’m excited to start receiving assignments, and $10 a photo isn’t too bad(; The meeting was almost worth the freezing bike ride out to IV in the dark. Speaking of IV, I don’t understand how all of the sorority girls manage to go out almost every night....

Superb Saturdays
Despite my lack of energy/excessive fatigue, today turned out pretty well. Went to brunch and then skyped Glo for a bit. There was a “carnival” in IV, but it was really only a ferris wheel and a couple of booths down the main block. Stopped by IV Drip on our way out and picked up a red velvet ice cream cookiewhich! Mmm. Unfortunately, the bus for downtown SB didn’t come...

Snailmail
Received these puppies from Chad today! They were the same slippers I lost, and they came with a book full of photos of a Pomeranian that’s so adorable he’ll melt your pants off. Quote of the day: “Sometimes, the rooting reflex reappears in 18-year-old males.” - My psych professor (If you don’t know what a rooting reflex is, google it)

Time to Explore
I’ve been spending the past couple of days looking for ways to get involved on campus: Hall Council, Polynesian Dance Club, AKP (co-ed business frat), The Daily Nexus (campus newspaper), intramurals, Behind the Walls, and a few other things. Of course, that also means that I haven’t had time to breath since yesterday morning. After having class from 9-5pm Tuesday, I got to check out...

First Week - Check!
It’s offical—I’ve spent a full week in SB. Kicked off the weekend with a rally (certainly not comparable to SRV’s) and the first game of the season against USD. We flew tortillas like they were frisbees and watched as some tripped out upperclassman girl punched my friend in the face. Lovely. Chad came down for a last minute visit and we roamed DP for a bit with everyone....

I Want This Foggy Weather to Go Away.
I had my first day of classes, which wasn’t too bad. Except for the part where I slipped and fell on a wet spot in the middle of the DLG (whoops). ChSt 1A and Psy1 both had some awesome professors, but I had to sit waaaay in the back for the latter and could barely even see his face. At least there was a hypnotist show later—pretty cool stuff.  Now off to breakfast!
